Waterton Reservoir Provincial Recreation Area
Majestic mountains form the backdrop for the Waterton Reservoir Provincial Recreation Area. On a calm day, water-borne reflections of mountains and puffy clouds in blue skies are worthy of the artist’s brush. Motor boats create the wake to give air to water skiers, but the sound of motors and skiers hardly scare the shorebirds and waterfowl that become accustomed to the noise. Winds common to the area drive sail boats and wind surfers alike.
For the fisherman, this reservoir is close enough to the mountains that the cold waters support a number of trout species and whitefish. Downstream of the dam as well, Rocky Mountain Whitefish, Rainbows, and Cutthroats will test your reflexes on the reel-end of a fly rod.
Twenty-five serviced campsites are located on the northwest end of the reservoir. The beach grows in size as the reservoir is drawn down during the irrigation season to supply water to the farms to the east.
